The business and how it has changed:
Over the last decade, the online adult web traffic industry has changed enormously.
Up until 2 – 3 years ago, the only way an adult surfer could obtain quality adult content was to visit the many pay based websites and whip out the credit card. The user would pay around $29.95 per month and would be presented with a members area that contained something like the following -
- Adult galleries (pictures)
- Adult movies (videos)
- Cam type shows
- Daily/Weekly/Monthly updates of the above
- Plug-ins offering video/gallery streams.
The above varied depending upon the niche that was being viewed.
The only freely available adult content would be picture galleries (on Thumbnail Gallery Posts aka TGPs) and short video clips (normally under a minute) and these were on sites such as Movie Gallery Posts (aka MGPs).
Nowadays, this has changed enormously and with the launch of adult video tube type websites, an enormous amount of hardcore content is easily accessible by the adult surfer. Many companies/site owners who own pay based membership sites have seen their sales suffer during this period and understandably are very unhappy about these adult tubes. However, it is certainly not all bad news for the adult web traffic industry as the following niches still sell very well:
- Cam sites
- Dating sites
- Smaller niche paysites (gay, shemale, fetish etc.).
Those areas hit mostly are generic adult content providers (this is the stuff that is readily available on all of the large adult tube sites).
More targeted niche based content does not tend to be available on the adult tubes/file sharing sites hence there is still a demand for this and continues to sell.
Thankfully, another area not hit is the provision of adult web traffic and ad sales because all sites continue to order traffic in an attempt to trigger growth (particularly those niches that are in demand and also the free based site – tubes).
Types Of Adult Business:
Listed below are the various type of adult websites/pages.
Picture Galleries
These are also known as TGP (Thumbnail Gallery Post) galleries. They contain a series of thumbnail images that launch the full size image when clicked.
The number of thumbs (pics) upon each gallery is between 12 – 20.
On two – three locations on the gallery, it will contain either links and/or banners to a pay based adult site. It is important to note that this is a gallery and not a TGP site (that follows next):
Thumbnail Gallery Post (TGP)
TGPs (and MGPs) dominated the online adult content sites for much of the past decade (apart from the last 2 – 3 years). A TGP comprises of literally hundreds of different galleries on one site.
TGPs still have a strong following amongst what many experts feel are the older generation of adult surfers who prefer pictures to videos.
Movie Galleries
Known as MGP (Movie Gallery Post) galleries. They are the exact same set-up as the TGP gallery model except they tend to offer short video clips (less than a minute).
A movie gallery would comprise of around 4 video clips.
As per the TGP model, the movie gallery contains links/banners to the paysite.
Movie Gallery Post (MGP)
Like the traditional TGP, the MGP contains literally hundreds of movie galleries.
So to summarise TGPs and MGP`s are free based sites that contain hundreds of picture/movie galleries. Obviously many sites combine picture galleries and movie galleries (so multiple categories). As mentioned previously, these sites dominated the adult content listings for much of the past decade however the adult tube model has now taken much of their adult web traffic.
Pay Based Sites
The paysite has been around pretty much since online adult content was available. The concept is fairly simple – the adult surfer pays a monthly membership to gain access to the content in the members area. The actual site design comprises of several tour type pages which contains sample type content that is available in the backend.
The join page requires a credit card (this covers the adult verification which is a requirement for Visa/Mastercard) and the monthly cost recurs every 30 days.
Pretty much every niche is available ranging from solo models, hardcore, fetishes, gay and so on. Those niches that have suffered the most from a sales perspective are the general porn providers who offer straight porn, lesbian, amateur type content (much of this type of content is saturated on the adult tubes).
What is not saturated on the tubes (and cannot be) are the following pay based sites -
- Adult Cams
- Adult Dating
Because of the nature of the above businesses, their will always be a strong adult web traffic market for these. Adult surfers love to watch sex cams and crave casual sex with likeminded adults.
The large adult tubes/free based sites are full of banners and text ads promoting these niches. This is an area where adult web traffic providers can see much success also selling traffic/ad spots to clients on these type of sites.
There are other pay based sites that are beginning to break through such as 3D porn and adult social networking type sites (similar to dating sites).
Adult Tubes/Forums/File Sharing Sites
These sites in recent years have literally exploded and receive enormous daily traffic (several adult tubes appear in the Alexa Top 100).
The adult tube model is simply based around providing as many adult videos as possible and providing them free of charge (no membership required to access such sites).
The videos listed tend to stream through Flash players (so stream instantly).
As mentioned, the content is mostly of the general variety (lesbian, hardcore etc).
The business model for these sites is based around the sale of the ad spots across the video pages and there is no shortage of clients (some of the very large adult media companies promote their cams and dating sites on their pages). The costs for running such sites are enormous (some of the very large adult tubes incur monthly costs amounting to 100s of thousands of dollars). Obviously video streaming is extremely bandwidth hungry.
The above sites are the main type of clients that adult web traffic providers will come across on an ongoing basis.
